Why do I Coach?
Design Coaching brings out the light bulb moment. It is the realisation within the individual that they had the answer all along but just weren't quite sure.
It can be pointing the designer in the right direction to achieve a more optimised result.
These are the moments you say "Yeah Baby".
Design Coaching differs from Design Consulting.
It is less about doing the work and more about the direction that the work is going.
Coaching is mentoring and guidance for designers and engineers as they develop their concept into a product.
Sometimes you already have good capable designers within your team, but they are young and keen but a little in-experienced. How can we harness that enthusiasm, point it in the right direction and accelerate their knowledge acquisition as fast as possible.
Sometimes it is a sounding board for experienced designers who want a fresh set of eye and 'kick the can around' to make sure they are on the right track.
Sometimes it is a new material or process that you are not familiar with that will optimise the outcome.
Sometimes I won't have the answer, but have 25 years of connections in my network so can point you to someone who does.
To use a well known fishing analogy (no I am not a fisherman) not so much 'catching the fish' (Design Consulting) or 'giving them the fish' (more Design Consulting) or even 'How to fish' (they hopefully know this already).
But helping to realise 'how to BEST fish for optimal outcomes' of catching a tasty fish (design coaching).
A lot of the times it is questions back to the designer like;
Where is the best place to fish?
What is the best bait to use?
What is the best time of day to fish? etc.
How do I coach?
This can be conducted in several ways:
-
a quick phone call when the designer is at an impasse to get you on your way
-
short design review meetings at regular touch points along the projects development.
-
25 years of Contacts within the industry in my little black book.
-
planning, conducting and leading brainstorming sessions.
This can be onsite or remote or a mix of the two.
Flexibility is the key to assist your team and design environment.
